This scene is partially inspired by how I felt after breaking up with my first girlfriend in middle school. I had spent the summer visiting family in California and after a few weeks of no contact, I returned to New York to find out she’d been hanging out with these older high school boys she met while I was away. My girlfriend thought we should all be friends, but I was too jealous and decided it was easier to break it off. One of the boys in question, not content to now be dating my ex-girlfriend, also thought it would be fun to harass me, all manner of which lead to months of depression and awkward times!
